Group Studies

Adult Learning and Life Group Opportunities

At First English we offer a wide variety of study and learning opportunities which reflect the interests and schedules of our FELC community.  Some are topic driven and occur over the course of multiple weeks.  Some are studies based on important times in the church calendar.  Yet others are groups which meet monthly and are bound by strong bonds of fellowship and faith that continue for years as they delve into studies of their choice.

First English considers these study groups, as well as choirs, to be Life Groups.  Life Groups are comprised of a few FELC and/or community members that share an interest.  Yet some Life Groups are based in faith but explore other activities enjoyed by the participants.  The structure, meeting times, and focus explored are self-determined by the group. Life Groups continue to change and grow and are a dynamic addition to the fellowship culture of First English.

So, find a topic, study, or Life Group that interests you and jump in!

Life Groups

Life Groups continue to do exciting things and enjoy each other’s company.  In some cases, these groups even contribute to church and community life in new and exciting ways.  Here’s a brief list of the groups beyond studies or choirs that have taken shape:

  • Daytime Women’s Book Club
  • Empty Nester Activities
  • Car Folks
  • Golf
  • Monthly Dining Out Group

Sunday Adult Learning Time

Introducing: Engage

We all would like to feel God’s presence in our lives. Although we know in our heads that cultivating any relationship takes time, there are so many responsibilities vying for our attention. In addition, we want to get to know those in our church family - and sitting in the same room for an hour on Sunday mornings isn’t enough. Some of us may work on weekends or find it impossible to get to church for a class.

So we hope you join us as we “Engage” our faith!

These forays into scripture are designed to meet you where you are at - at home, in classes at church, or in the Gathering Area as you are talking to friends.

1. Engage Online: The online element of “Engage” is through our facebook Engage Page. Each week, we start on Wednesday to turn our hearts and minds to the lessons for the upcoming Sunday. With links to the Bible lesson, these short devotionals encourage leaving comments, but are also designed for those who don’t leave posts. Sunday through Tuesday we are encouraged to think about topics from the lessons and sermon that we heard on Sunday. Because the two sites use different lessons many weeks, there is a Downtown Site Engage Page along with a North Site Engage Page.

2. Engage in Lessons: The Engage Page will be in the bulletin each week so that those who are not Facebook users will have the same questions and lessons that are available online. In addition, at the Downtown Site we will have a class that meets at 9:15 a.m. which will look even more deeply into the lessons.

3. Engage in Conversations: We know your church family is important to you - and Sunday morning might be the only time to connect with one another. This is what Luther called the mutual consolation of the saints! As you are talking, consider discussing one of the questions which will be on the tables in the Gathering Area. Help bring the lessons and sermons into your everyday life.

Whatever you choose, we hope you are blessed as you “Engage” your faith.
