Neighbor Network

Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment.  And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’”—Matthew 22: 37-39 (NIV)

COVID-19 Emergency Assistance Fund

Member offerings help support our community partners like LEAVEN, Goodwill, Salvation Army, St. Joseph’s Food Pantry and more.  These partners are great resources for helping persons who are in need of financial help.  For instance, LEAVEN is prepared to assist with costs related to rent, utilities, car repairs, gas, bus passes, health insurance premiums, diapers, health insurance premiums, and other basic necessities.

Sometimes, however, community resources are unavailable.  This is why First English Lutheran Church has established a COVID-19 Emergency Assistance Fund to provide financial help when little is available elsewhere.

At FELC, we are encouraged to “Love Jesus. Live your call.”  What does this mean for us and for our congregation?  How might we better live our calls – both individually and collectively?

Introducing, “Neighbor Network.”  Quite simply, Neighbor Network is an important way FELC connects people’s need to serve with others’ unmet needs.  It’s a direct and joyful response to God’s love for us and Jesus’ command to love our neighbor.  It’s also an ongoing, year-round extension of “God’s Work. Our Hands.”

Who is a Neighbor?  A neighbor is anyone other than ourselves. A neighbor is a person, independent of place.  Neighbors are the people within and beyond the walls of our buildings; they are part of our congregation as well as part of our community.  Regardless of their connection to FELC or any faith community, each is loved by God and deserving of our love, too.

What does Neighbor Network do?  It provides FELC with the focused and practical means to live our calls by:

  • Gathering and organizing our volunteers’ interests, capabilities and capacity to serve.
  • Identifying and capturing people’s unmet needs.
  • Coordinating delivery of volunteers’ services to satisfy these needs.

Through FELC’s Neighbor Network, we’ll build and deepen relationships through service; provide volunteers with the means to live their call; increase our individual involvement and collective impact; increase community social connectedness; and experience joy in abundance – as we work together, help others, and share in God’s intended community.
