May 27, 2008, Council meeting
minutes summary
The Congregational Council met on May 27,
2008, with Bishop Jim Justman as a guest at tonight’s meeting. In light of
Pastor Lyle’s resignation, Bishop Justman discussed the call process and
several options for finding a new pastor.
The Council is reviewing its options and identifying candidates for a
call committee to be appointed in the near future. The Council will meet as required to review
its options and make decisions regarding calling a new staff pastor. The
Council approved a motion from the Worship Ministry Team Task Force to create
two subgroups of the Worship Ministry Team: one for the Downtown Site and one
for the North Site. The Worship Ministry Team will be a smaller group providing
oversight to both subgroups. A survey of the congregation about the worship
experience is forthcoming. The Council approved a “Covenant of Conduct” to
clarify the process for church members, staff, pastors and Council members to
raise opinions and concerns for consideration. An update was provided
concerning the Executive Committee’s review of the role of the lead
pastor. Recommendations will be
forthcoming given the need to call a new staff pastor. The treasurer reported
that expenses are in line with our 2008 budget. Giving is behind by 3.1 percent
and the Council discussed options for raising the issue with the congregation.
The capital appeal is at approximately 50 percent of its goal. The Council
discussed the need to explain to the congregation the importance of the Capital
Appeal. As approved by the congregation, reducing our debt has been the
long-term goal to support our church programs as defined during our transition.
Without reducing the debt, church programs may suffer, a result that may be
confronted if the capital appeal is not successful. Pastor Detweiler and Pastor
Lyle provided updates on the search for a director of music at both sites.
