Pastor Dave's Devotions
Today's Daily Devotion by Pastor Dave Lyle
Tuesday, Oct. 3:
"It was fitting that God, for whom and through whom all things exist, in bringing many children to glory, should make the pioneer of their salvation perfect through sufferings." Hebrews 2:10
I recently finished reading "The Age of Gold: The California Gold Rush and the New American Dream," by H. W. Brands. Brands details the great rush of 1849, when people from all over the
world descended upon the gold fields of California. These pioneers often suffered greatly in their pursuit of wealth. Many did not reach their destination. Regions like Death Valley earned their names. But because of the travels of these early pioneers, travel gradually became easier and faster. That's what pioneers do; they make new things possible for those who come after. The pioneer of our faith did much the same. Jesus was perfected for God through his willingness to suffer, even to die a shameful death. But in doing so, Jesus made a new way possible through the wilderness of sin and death. Jesus made a new way possible for God to bring many children to the glory of forgiveness and eternal life. Through his sufferings, and through the sufferings we endure, we find ourselves further along the road. Indeed, in Christ safe passage is guaranteed.
