Downtown Site director of music
First English Lutheran Church, a congregation of 2,000 members worshiping in two sites, is searching for a full-time director of music for its Downtown Site. Our two church buildings are located four miles apart from one another in Appleton, Wis., a community of 72,000 (in a metropolitan area of 250,000). This area enjoys a deep musical tradition and benefits greatly from excellent public school music programs and Lawrence University, located only a few blocks from our Downtown Site. The influence of Lawrence is seen especially in the presence of jazz musicians in several of our musical groups.
The individual selected to serve in this position will be a leader in planning worship and working with the pastors and the Worship Ministry Team. He or she will need to demonstrate strong musical and administrative skills, and be flexible enough to work with diverse musical styles.
The director of music will work with the pastors, musicians and others in planning worship at the Downtown Site that will encourage the participation of the congregation. At that site we have six music groups, ranging from the 25-voice Parish Choir and the 30-voice Seraphim (youth) Choir to a bell choir and jazz combo. There are musical activities for children of all ages, including the Musikgarten program of the Arthur Krempin School of Music & Art, which FELC houses.
The director will oversee the use of all FELC Downtown Site music facilities, instruments and equipment for worship, music education and performance. Those instruments include a 1978 Wahl tracker organ (II/50), a Steinway 7-foot grand piano, full drum set and Yamaha practice pianos. FELC has a scholarship fund for organ students and a summer intern program for college students to help them utilize and develop their gifts.
We expect the director to play for two Sunday and one weekday service every week at the Downtown Site and for additional services during Lent. He or she will direct the Parish Choir and oversee all musicians and groups, giving the musical aspects of our worship a Lutheran focus and excellence that points us to God, the author of truth and beauty. The director will have an important role in shaping both traditional and contemporary services.
