Count Me In - Ministry Teams/Task Forces

What is Count Me In? It is a periodic emphasis to lift up volunteer opportunities within FELC, the community and the world. Some will be short term obligations while others may be ongoing worship roles that are in need of more volunteers. Below is a special Count Me In lifting up our Ministry Teams and their task forces. A ministry team is a group of people who meet to develop strategies for ministry activities. Meetings last no longer than 90 minutes. Frequency of meetings varies per team - either monthly, every other month or quarterly. A task force is a group of people who engage in a specific activity of a ministry team. Frequency of activity varies but could be as little as once a year. Please sign up to engage in a ministry team or task force or to indicate interest. If you have questions contact Kathy Larson at 733-2303 or klarson@felc.com.

Faith on Trial in July

The popular Faith on Trial series returns as we examine the most controversial questions about faith. Facilitators will lead discussions through four topics: 1)The Bible: How do people of faith who honor the Bible as God's inspired word deal with the violence and inconsistencies that it contains? 2)Evolution/Science: Science is increasingly seen as being able to give answers about life and living that negate the need for religion; 3)The Church: Through the centuries, the church has participated in many atrocities in the name of God; 4) Suffering and Evil: If there truly is a benevolent God, why does evil exist and why do we suffer? Join us as we test our own faith systems and find new ways to look at belief in an ever changing world. This four week series begins July 6 in the North Site Library from 7-8 p.m. No study materials are needed for this class.

Drops Like Stars: Study, Meditation & Creation

We plot. We plan. We assume things are going to go a certain way. And when they don't, we find ourselves in a new place---a place we haven't been before, a place we never would have imagined on our own. It is the difficult and the unexpected, and maybe even the tragic, that opens us up and frees us to see things in new ways. Many of the most significant moments in our lives come not because it all went right but because it all fell apart. Suffering does that. It hurts, but it also creates. is an exploration of the complex relationship between suffering and creativity, driven by the belief that there is art in the agony. Join Pastor Jeff after Easter for a study and creative session based on Rob Bell's book, Drops Like Stars. We will read brief excerpts, pray, meditate, and see how our life experiences shape the art we create during our time together. Classes for this five week study will begin Sunday, April 26 at 4:00 pm at the North Site. Please sign-up to reserve a book and to ensure enough art supplies.

Speaking Christian - Sunday Adult Study at NS

In Speaking Christian, acclaimed biblical scholar Marcus Borg, author of Meeting Jesus Again for the First Time, argues the very language Christians use has become dangerously distilled, distorted, and disconnected from the beliefs which once underpinned it. Stated in a case that will resonate with the readers of N.T. Wright's Simply Christian, Borg calls for a radical change to the language we use to invoke our beliefs - the only remedy that will allow the Church's words to once again ring with truth, power, and hope. Tea and Justice Adult Summer Study

What started as an impossible dream-to build a café that employs women recovering from prostitution and addiction-is helping to fuel an astonishing movement to bring freedom and fair wages to women producers worldwide where tea and trafficking are linked by oppression and the opiate wars. Becca Stevens started the Thistle Stop Café to empower women survivors. But when she discovered a connection between café workers and tea laborers overseas, she embarked on a global mission called "Shared Trade" to increase the value of women survivors and producers across the globe. As she recounts the victories and unexpected challenges of building the café, Becca also sweeps the reader into the world of tea, where timeless rituals transport to an era of beauty and the challenging truths about tea's darker, more violent history. She offers moving reflections of the meaning of tea in our lives, plus recipes for tea blends that readers can make themselves. In this journey of triumph for impoverished tea laborers, hope for café workers, and insight into the history of tea, Becca sets out to defy the odds and prove that love is the most powerful force for transformation on earth. Join us for this fascinating, relevant summer study. Two class meeting times will be offered, 5 p.m. and 7 p.m., on Wednesdays before and after worship at the North Site beginning July 22 and ending August 12. Sign-up to reserve your copy of the book. Worship Matters

This introductory course has been developed to help participants grow into a richer understanding of the foundational questions about why we gather, how we encounter God in worship, and how that encounter shapes our response in both our communities and the world. Topics include the church year, the lectionary, holy baptism, holy communion, corporate prayer, worship and culture, and more. While Lutherans don't all worship in exactly the same way, they do hold central things in common. This course invites exploration of those central things by considering the purpose and pattern of worship as practiced by Lutherans - the why and the how. This interesting class begins the week of September 13. Please sign up for your desired course time. Also, indicate if you will need a book (the cost is $7.50) and if you will need childcare.

Bonhoeffer: The Cost of Discipleship Adult Study

In September we offer a six-week study that will explore Deitrich Bonhoeffer's compelling work, The Cost of Discipleship. Bonhoeffer, one of the most important theologians of the twentieth century, illuminates the relationship between ourselves and the teachings of Jesus, What can the call to discipleship, the adherence to the word of Jesus, mean for us today? Drawing on the Sermon on the Mount, Dietrich Bonhoeffer answers this timeless question by providing a seminal reading of the dichotomy between "cheap grace" and "costly grace." The Cost of Discipleship is a compelling statement of the demands of sacrifice and ethical consistency from a man whose life and thought were exemplary articulations of a new type of leadership inspired by the Gospel, and imbued with the spirit of Christian humanism and a creative sense of civic duty. Classes begin September 14 at 4 and 7:15 p.m. in Downtown Room 114. Registration is available online at felc.com. Books will be in the Gathering Areas and at class for $12.
