Baptism-to-Preschool Faith Formation Group 2020-21

The infant and early childhood years are a special time of building closeness and trust in community, allowing children to follow their natural desire to play, and introduce the most basic of Christian concepts like, love, belonging, and kindness in small ways. It's also an important time for parents as they develop and grow their set of tools to nurture faith in their families. Being aware of these needs has led us to work on building a baptism-to-nursery program for children newborn to age 3. It will be a time for parents and their age 3 and younger children to come together in faith during Learning Time in the nursery. Parents can have a cup of coffee, spend time with their children as they play, maybe hear a story, and do a coloring page. The most substantial task of the time together is building relationships in faith and starting to develop bonds in Christ and the church which will continue to blossom as the years pass. Due to the daily changing needs of young children, and the simple structure of this group, Birth-to-Preschool Faith Formation Groups are self-led with weekly materials provided.

An Invitation to Small Group Ministry

A small group is not just another study group. It is a new way of doing church, a way to get connected more deeply to each other and a way to be intentional about growing in our faith. Several times a year, we will offer a study on a topic that will be helpful to our entire congregation. Then in between those studies, we encourage small groups to engage in activities that would be particular helpful to their group. Beginning Oct. 4, we are pleased to lift up a study on the topic of combatting racism. We will be sharing in "Vital Conversations 1: Realities of Race and Racism" offered by the General Commission on Religion and Race of the United Methodist Church. We will share in video topics such as "Meaningful Conversations on Race" and "Church: Building a Beloved Community." Please join us in helping FELC become a congregation with many robust small group communities by completing and submitting the form below. Or if you prefer, contact Kathy Larson, Faith Connections Coordinator, directly at klarson@felc.com or (920)731-4969.

Confirmation Prayer Group

The Confirmation Prayer Group is for members of the congregation and beyond that would like to commit to weekly prayer for the Confirmation classes at First English. Meetings would occur once a month on a Wednesday evening to pray as a group for the prayer concerns of Confirmation students in all three grades. This is a newly forming, lay-led, group so many of the additional specifics will be determined by the engagement abilities of its members. In the past, First English prayer partners have enjoyed adding wonderful students in their prayers. This is a new model which does not make individual matches but instead provides a more sustainable, consistent prayer group for all students.

Worship Matters

This introductory course has been developed to help participants grow into a richer understanding of the foundational questions about why we gather, how we encounter God in worship, and how that encounter shapes our response in both our communities and the world. Topics include the church year, the lectionary, holy baptism, holy communion, corporate prayer, worship and culture, and more. While Lutherans don't all worship in exactly the same way, they do hold central things in common. This course invites exploration of those central things by considering the purpose and pattern of worship as practiced by Lutherans - the why and the how. This interesting class begins the week of September 13. Please sign up for your desired course time. Also, indicate if you will need a book (the cost is $7.50) and if you will need childcare.

Bonhoeffer: The Cost of Discipleship Adult Study

In September we offer a six-week study that will explore Deitrich Bonhoeffer's compelling work, The Cost of Discipleship. Bonhoeffer, one of the most important theologians of the twentieth century, illuminates the relationship between ourselves and the teachings of Jesus, What can the call to discipleship, the adherence to the word of Jesus, mean for us today? Drawing on the Sermon on the Mount, Dietrich Bonhoeffer answers this timeless question by providing a seminal reading of the dichotomy between "cheap grace" and "costly grace." The Cost of Discipleship is a compelling statement of the demands of sacrifice and ethical consistency from a man whose life and thought were exemplary articulations of a new type of leadership inspired by the Gospel, and imbued with the spirit of Christian humanism and a creative sense of civic duty. Classes begin September 14 at 4 and 7:15 p.m. in Downtown Room 114. Registration is available online at felc.com. Books will be in the Gathering Areas and at class for $12. Kindle and Book Nook versions are also available.
