About This Blog...
Hi! My name is Olivia Newhouse and I am an intern this summer at First English Lutheran Church. This is a blog that will be a behind the scenes account of all the things that happen at First English in the summer. I am excited to provide another outlet of our continuous faith journey.

Back to Reality
July 18, 2019

This week has been really good, although it was hard to get back to normal after we had the long weekend after the 4th of July. I had a good few days off and was able to go up north with my family and celebrate my 22nd birthday.

Some events that went on include refuel where we played the best game of beach volleyball I have ever seen, going to Eagle Point where I lost continuously Scrabble and had a really fun Hawaiian themed worship service.

For me, the best part of the week where I saw God at work was at the College Info Retreat on Friday morning. We gathered together and talked for a few hours with 5 or 6 students who are soon headed to college. I loved this experience because it allowed me to connect with the high schoolers on another level rather than just hanging out together at refuel. No questions were off-limits and all the interns and students were open with what they were worried about going into this process. For me, going to school was one of the biggest changes I made as an adult, along with my decision to study abroad last semester. My decision to move away from my family and grow on my own changed me for the better. I am more myself today than I have ever been in my life. The ability to share my college story and experience so far with the kids was really impactful for me. It allowed me to open up to them in a way I hadn’t before. I am glad I was given this opportunity as it allowed for personal growth and growth for all those who attended the “retreat”.

I have really loved this job so far as it has challenged me to try new things outside my comfort zone, like running Kids Life and Day Camp and grow in my faith, especially in the relationships between myself and the other interns. One relationship that has proved to be long-lasting is my friendship with Kent. The meaningful support and caring relationship we have created will continue to strengthen as the summer continues. I am thankful for this program and for what it has given to me.

1 Thessalonians 5:18

give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.
